Cambelt / timing belt

Cambelt replacement in Hanham and Saltford

The cambelt keeps your engine’s valves and pistons in time. It has a fixed replacement interval, commonly every 4–5 years or 60,000–100,000 miles, and it’s a job you do before it fails, because a snapped belt usually means a new engine. Tell us your registration and we’ll check the exact interval and quote it.

Why it matters

On most modern engines the cambelt is an “interference” design, if it breaks, valves and pistons collide and the damage runs into four figures. A planned replacement is a fraction of that.

There’s no warning before a belt fails, so mileage and age are what count. If you’ve just bought a used car with no cambelt history, it’s worth doing for peace of mind.

What we replace

The belt, tensioner and idler pulleys as a kit. They wear together. On engines where the water pump is belt-driven, we’ll usually recommend doing that at the same time so you’re not paying the labour twice.

We use quality OE-matching parts and set the timing to the manufacturer’s marks.

Questions

Cambelt replacement

When should a cambelt be replaced?

At the interval in your handbook, commonly every 4–5 years or 60,000–100,000 miles, whichever comes first. Give us the registration and we’ll confirm the exact figure.

What happens if it snaps?

On most modern engines, serious internal damage that costs far more than a planned replacement. Do it before it fails.

Do you replace the water pump too?

Usually yes, where the pump is belt-driven. It saves a second lot of labour later. We’ll advise for your engine.

My car has a timing chain, not a belt. Do I need this?

Chains generally last the life of the engine but can stretch. If yours is rattling on start-up, book a diagnostic.
